Rewarding HR Careers in the Entertainment Industry
A Strategic Human Resources Introduction into the High Paying Entertainment WorldJonathan Arnold entertainment attorney lead PL Instructor

If you are one of the many followers of the LFC (LegalFieldCareers.com) site you know that there are many creative and 'strategic' ways to make HR (Human Resources) your high paying career choice. That applies to seeking that career in a particular firm or going it alone with your own HR Consulting Business. Also if you follow some of our advanced career tips/articles you now see that the term 'HR' is being advanced to Strategic Human Resources (SHR), the new term you'll be seeing more of. So, let's venture into an introduction into an interesting potential for HR or SHR Careers in the Entertainment Industry.

Just as we described in our recent article 'Intro into Paralegal Careers in the Entertainment Industry', HR is another one of them. Interestingly, both PL and HR play a most definitive, important and equal 'Role' (your play on words), in this exciting world of Broadcast, Film and Music.

Normally when you engage in conversations about careers in the EI (Entertainment Industry) the most obvious that comes to mind is the Talent such as the Actors, Actresses and Performers you see on stage on TV and in the Movies. But do you realize that a career in the EI has far more occupational opportunities than just these? Major Studios all have large departments other than the sound stages or location shoots, with diverse responsibilities and specialties you’ll be able to target.

Keep in mind that many of the larger studios have within them, other departments, divisions, corporate companies and so on that produce variations of themes, formats, styles, etc., as well as numerous locations. For example, there are just as many people (if not more) on the marketing side of a studio as there are in production – put another way, for every one person that appears on screen there are about 15 more people involved in any one film or TV show or video. This means that the opportunity to be promoted to another division, another location, another department, etc., provide extended opportunities for career choices and advancements.

HR Job Positions are Abundant in the Entertainment Industry

To illustrate this point a recent review sampling of HR Job Openings in the Entertainment Industry from job search firms Simply Hired, and Entertainment Careers.net revealed opening positions for HR Administrative Assistants, Coordinators, Tech Recruiters, HR Generalists, Records positions and more. The hiring firms showed position openings ranging from Film, TV, Telecom, Broadcast, Music and Talent Agency Groups with such noted companies as Turner Broadcasting, NBC Universal, Warner Bros. Entertainment Group, Walt Disney International, Netflix and many more.

So as you see, the opportunities are vast and all who desire to steer your SHR career towards this category have to do with your excellent advanced career courses in HR/aPHR you obtain at LAVC is use strategic focus and apply yourself with the skills and advanced tips and resources we provide you with here. Remember, at LFC we have been introducing you to a wide array of advanced maximum impact resources, tips and articles as with SHR the term you can check out more right here on the LFC site. Adding the short 'mini' aPHR course to your SHR resume and taking advantage of the many unique and advanced tips and articles and resources we introduce to you, gives you a decided edge in this rewarding and high paying career field.

A Lot of Flavors in the Entertainment Ice-Cream

When you're ready to begin your career, you'll be happy to discover that the EI has many different playing fields, Film, Broadcast TV, National Commercial Advertising, Music, Live Stage, Cable TV Streaming Services, Talent Agencies, Recording Studios, Performing Rights Organizations, Industry Union Guilds and on and on. Unlike focusing on a general business type, It's like Baskin-Robbins, there's all those flavors of Ice Cream you can choose from, with just as many toppings, and they make 'em all' for a reason.

A Lot of Historic Potential

Plus you never know where your SHR EI career can lead. For example, ever hear stories of people starting out in the mail room of a major studio and becoming a CEO? It happens and here are two well-known names that went from starting out in the mail room to the top:

- Music mogul David Geffen, owner of multiple record labels and partner in the founding of DreamWorks. Geffen was a three-time college dropout working in the mail room at William Morris Talent Agency giving him his start.

- Billionaire Barry Diller became the CEO of Paramount Pictures, creating Fox and USA after dropping out of college. Diller also managed to land a job in the mail room at the William Morris Agency.

The mail room scenario has some interesting aspects to it as the worker there gets to see all of the departments, the operations, and often meet with in the course of their duties, a lot of the top executive and operational departments. Just as in the 'Mail room to Stardom' scenario, the HR Department also provides a complete insight and working knowledge of the entire EI 'day to day' operations and executive functions, and for some reason that seems to be the clue to the mystery of how one can go from simply delivering envelopes to running the firm.

Familiarize Yourself for an 'EI' Advantage

You can add maximum impact to that clue by strategic research into the specific EI category you want to focus on and learn, or as we often state, 'familiarize' yourself with as many foundation aspects of the operations you can. As we emphasized in our PL EI Intro, this will accomplish a couple things, one is it will show you have a sincere vested interest in your HR Career and the specific firm you're applying to, and two, reveal that you have an internal personal familiarization that exceeds those of your competitors, and that all adds up in your favor. Taking the LAVC mini-course for aPHR adds impact to your SHR education that can boost not only your chances of a higher paying position and value-added incentive to a firm considering to bring you on, but will allow you to go it on your own with your own SHR Consultant business you can use to focus on the EI with. Regardless of what your desire, the option of a rewarding and potentially high paying position or running your own SHR business, the Entertainment Industry provides almost unlimited opportunities for both.

We'll show you everything you need to know about becoming a HR (SHR) and our fantastic aPHR Bonus Course, now it's your turn to focus on the 'Field' you want to apply it in.
