Making the Most of your SHR Strategic Human Resource Career Strategic Approach for
Your High-Velocity SHR and 'Maximum Impact' aPHR Career
by Jonathan Arnold, Esq. - Director By now you've probably seen
some of our many numerous advanced articles on marketing and
promoting your Human Resource or SHR Strategic Human
Resource career. If not, we highly suggest you visiting our
Articles and Tips Section to review all of the valuable
career-boosting content. We have, and continue, to cover
both options: one for landing a career with a great firm and
the other for going into business for yourself as your own
HR services business. Consider this article as a strategic
approach to consider 'during…not after' working towards your
own SHR and aPHR certifications and as what we label
Maximum-Impact Tips.
Yes, your 7 month WASC
Accredited courses at LAVC are High-Velocity, meaning,
you'll acquire in 7 months what others are taking 1 to 2
years to achieve, and, you'll come out with little-to-no
student debt. You can start 'Earning' while students at
other schools are still 'Learning’ Also, these courses have
been proclaimed by those with Military Intelligence Training
as the most organized and easy to learn teaching approaches
of their kind. You can and probably even should, use that as
bragging rights, because you'll earn it. Don't start
sweating though because those 7 months will go by so fast
you won't even notice it because you'll be too busy 'looking
good!'
Plan Your Plan...Your Strategic Plan
To make an illustration
here, stop here before reading on, take a minute and grab a
pen and paper and quickly write down your top 6 or 7
strategic plans for your career once you graduate and gain
your certificate, then you can compare your list to what is
going to be featured later on here.
Trick suggestion?
Maybe, but first off how many of you wrote that once you
graduate you're going to apply to a host of quality job
resources firms or develop your business plan for starting
your own business? For those of you who've been taught this
tired ole' worn out advice from other schools, drop what
you're doing and run out to the local costume shop, buy a
dunce cap and stand in the corner for 10 minutes.
With all that in mind, you already started your
career when you decided on your course selection so apply
that principle as you work towards your certification. While
we state that your 7 month course is a high-velocity one,
that doesn't mean you won't have any spare time at all.
Consider your strategic planning as 'part of' your course,
not an afterthought. For example, designate 2 days at a
couple hours a day or less, out of each week, any two days
that are convenient and yes, 'comfortable and relaxed' for
you, and do the following
1 List the industry NAICS
or SIC categories
Just an FYI, in case you haven't
run across this one before, the North American Industry
Classification System (NAICS) and Standard Industrial
Classification (SIC) 4 digit codes established in 1937 are
the standard used by Federal agencies used to classify
various industry types and establishments related in U.S.
Business, SIC is also used in other countries. Now that
we've led you into the weeds with that technical set of 25
cent words, forget about the jargon and just start writing
down your Top 10 list of business categories 'You' really
find interesting and would like to devote your career in.
This may be the most important tip anyone could offer here.
If you already realize the importance of this then great, if
you overlooked it then consider the following. If you apply
your career in something you find interesting and really
have a desire to be a part of, you're going to be far more
successful than going to one of these Job Resource sites and
submitting tons of applications just to market to or land a
'job someplace'.
1.1 Select your Category interest on your own
Out of your
Top 10 Categories, select a few specific companies within
the list. For example let's say you want to get in on the
fantastic new opportunities in Aerospace, have always wanted
to be a part of the Entertainment Industry or maybe
Oceanography and preservation of our Oceans has always been
something you wanted to be a part of. Now you have started
to form and define your direction based on company subjects
of close interest to you. Also, don't spend time looking to
see if there are any current openings yet, those can change
daily, just focus on each one separately. By the way, it is
highly recommended that if those particular industries are
of interest that you watch a video intro and read our unique
articles on each one here on the legalfieldcareers.com site,
it will most definitely give you some points and elements
you haven't considered.
1.2 Well-Define Your
'Submission's List
Target your list of those you have
selected and research individual companies 'during' your
courses. Once you have settled on an industry of interest
make a narrower list of all the firms you find that appear
to have greatest potential 'within' your list you find
highly potential to and for you.
1.3 Why Your Own
List
You make up your own list as opposed to contacting
the standard job resource sites so you can do your own STM
(Selective Target Marketing). You will find that there will
be a certain amount of excitement in each one you pursue by
doing this. The job resource sites will always be available
if you decide to rely on some of those later on.
2
Two a Week
Now that you have your list, and don't
worry about how long it is either, start by taking the first
one on that list and do your research on it. Why do we say,
2-a-week? Because as we state throughout the Legal Field
Careers site, your courses at LAVC are 'High-Velocity' and
by making it easier on yourself for this career selection
procedure by only taking 1 or 2 hours only two days out of
your week, you may find it will actually be something you'll
look forward to while taking the pressure off yourself and
make this something you enjoy, not stress over.
3
Targeting Each One Their Website as Your Source Start
with the first one on your list and research the following
three elements: 3.1 About 3.2 Milestones 3.3
Mission Statement
When you visit the firm's site
you'll generally see the above mentioned features or
variations thereof, especially in Aerospace and many
Maritime or Oceanographic institutions, as well as many new
AI (Artificial Intelligence) startups and established
organizations or firms.
The About tells you Who They Are The Milestones tells you What They've Done and Where They've Been The Mission Statement tells you What
They're Pursuing and Where They're Going
Just those
three features provide a wealth of resource for company
background, how You Can Fit in and Potential for Growth and
Advancement (or in the case of selecting them for marketing
your own SHR business to)- Potential for Business.
Now some of you reading this may ask, "But Professor are you
sure you didn't leave something out?" Yep, sure did, saved
it for last and maybe in a strange sort of way, the most
important.
3.4 Staff or Company Profile
Here's
where perhaps one of your best secret weapons may be. Most
credible major firms feature a Staff or Company Profile or
Executive Profile, with photos.
Many companies stray
from the traditional standard Bio format listings for the
main staff and offer some very personal details about whom
you'll be pitching yourself or your services to. You'll end
up knowing a lot about them.
GRADUATE FAST - GRADUATE
WITHOUT STUDENT DEBT - CERTIFIED WASC 'HIGH-VELOCITY'
COURSES
Result of your 7 month
Two-A-Week STM (Selected Target Marketing) for your career
is that you now have a well-defined list of approximately 56
companies (do the math) to Apply or Market to which you now
know more about them then they will about you 'before' you
approach them. With your great High-Velocity WASC accredited
course in SHR and aPHR certifications what do you think your
chances are of getting the opportunity to get their
attention of at least one serious interest? Remember, from
the 'career seeking the firm' standpoint you only need one
of them. From the standpoint of 'marketing your own
business' you have 56 chances and even just one of these
qualified firms that you pre-qualified yourself can bring
you a great deal of business for 'Your' new firm.
What you've just done, if you haven't realized it yet, is
that instead of waiting for them to qualify you, you've just
pre-qualified them, you know about their staff, their
hobbies, their interests, their intended technical
applications, they're direction, what they're looking for
and much more. A big advantage going in and they haven't
even met you yet. A great advantage as you can tailor your
resume toward each one strategically especially by using
your Familiarity Bio Addendum as we suggest throughout our
articles.
A Strategic Concept for Your Bio
Far too many in the industry and other college courses
give you this 'boring standardized' format for your bio,
most state to only give two pages. Problem is the way most
of these administrative pencil-sharpeners tell you to do
your resume is so homogenized, pasteurized and boring it
becomes just 'another' resume to those your presenting
yourself to or marketing to. Well, let's get a little
creative here.
How many of you have heard stories
about people who've landed a great opportunity at a firm
mainly because they just happened to list a couple hobbies
and that one of them was something one of the mangers or
execs' at the firm they were applying to was heavily into.
Yes that happens and more often than one might think. So why
not get creative here.
By now you should have an
in-depth detailed look at not just what this industry is
looking for but more importantly, what this firm is looking
for.
So instead of a 2 page 6 point type bio they
need a magnifying glass and takes 5 minutes to read because
you wanted to cram a bunch of 'about me' stuff into it using
all text, why not do a creatively designed 3 page bio.
Page 1 - Cover Good sized photo of
yourself (aprox.1/3) page size
Your short Version of
their ABOUT and Profile page with a short paragraph in 14
point type (for example) of important highlights that boost
your image and give you the upfront appearance of an
'Interesting Potential Fit' for the firm. Make this what the
entertainment industry calls 'Your Grabber'. Get their
attention because on their desk will be a whole pile of 2
page resumes in text while next to theirs, 'most likely'
will be your Photo Cover Print. Your Photo in black and
white, or use Color. Read time: aprox. 7 seconds
Page 2 - 1 page Synopsis style Resume/Bio
No lengthy sentences, they won't read them anyway.
Just like a Feature Film release does with their story-line
descriptions. Here's where you list in short sentences,
hopefully edited down to one sentence per line, list
education bg., your qualifications, any awards,
accomplishments, and an interests and hobbies part. Much of
the standard necessary 'stuff' but designed in a more
polished 'message delivery' creative way. Read Time: aprox.
25 seconds
Page 3 - 1 page Familiarity Bio Your Version of their Mission Statement
(Highlighting familiar elements of the particular firms
operations that you're familiar with and interested in as
we've discussed throughout the LFC site).
Your
Familiarity Bio would include specific and hopefully unique
elements of one or more of the firm's specific functions,
features or advancements that you've studied and have an
interest in. Read Time: aprox. 15 seconds
You should
also add a brief disclaimer something to the affect that:
- Elaboration on content and statements herein
available upon request -
Total average read
time for your 3 page Resume: less than 60 seconds, but
PowerPacked!
4 Your Well-Defined Support Bio
And just so you're really prepared, prepare a 2nd Resume
which is a more well-defined version covering main points
that you 'hold back' until you're asked for more detail.
That way if they should ask for something you didn't include
or only highlighted, you can whip that out right there on
the spot instead of saying you'll have to get back with
them. But it is only an 'In Response To' backup. Shows that
you're not just prepared, but you're a Pro and that you're
one step ahead of them.
Above all, make your initial
strategic resume not just a Fast Read, but a curiosity
generating eye catcher showing creativity and your desire by
presenting your professional interest towards the firm
you're approaching that you're a 'Perfect Fit'. In other
words your not 'ASKING' for a position or business
relationship, but 'BRINGING' value' to the firm.
For
those of you wanting to start your own business and market
to these groups you need to create a solid marketing
approach with well designed materials and video with a
complete multi-media experience on your site. This of course
requires far more detail than can be elaborated on here in
this article, but goes without saying as it is another topic
in itself.
So simply put you're approach should
impress... "here I am!". So make them a presentation 'they
can't refuse!'
