Many of our articles have focused on some very interesting Bold career potentials to consider applying your SHR - aPHR (Strategic Human Resource / Associate Professional in Human Resource) bonus certification career to. Industries such as Aerospace, AI, Robotics, Maritime, even the Entertainment Industry offer some very unique potentials as previously featured. Of course you always have the more traditional business types, but that's not what we're discussing here, you don't need introductions on those. By now regulars to the LegalFieldCareers site have come to expect and enjoy much more and know that we don't just give you the regular boring 'Stuff' other colleges, universities, institutions, sanitariums or whatever you want to call them offer, and most of you seem to be glad of it. Of course we feature the traditional ways to forward your career but we regularly feature the Bold and the Unique industries and businesses you may not even have thought of and their vast potentials to boost your creativity thinking and give you that 'Maximum-Impact' value. This articles no different, so if you're looking for the standard traditional article, this 'Ain't' it. This article features a more uniquely widespread industry in Computer Sciences and all of the other potential industry 'types' under their industry codes, that being NAICS and SIC.

Before taking a look further into Computer Sciences, it may be a good idea to have a basic understanding of what those industry codes are and how they can help you locate and research a particular industry you may have an interest in.

So what is the difference between the two codes NAICS and SIC?

SIC
The Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) system was originally developed in the 1930’s to classify establishments by their type of activity but has not been updated since 1987, however, the SIC system is still widely used

NAICS
The North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) was established in 1997 to replace the no longer sufficient SIC system and developed to eliminate the inconsistent logic utilized in the SIC system and to increase specificity from the 4 digit SIC system by creating a 6 digit NAICS code. Look at the NAICS coding as the new version of SIC. You can locate their search on both systems at Search NAICS and SIC Codes by Industry naics.com.

At LFC the effort is on getting you thinking toward the Unique and Bold opportunities, here are just 2 NAICS codes 541714 Research and Development in Biotechnology (except Nanobiotechnology) and 541715 Research and Development in the Physical, Engineering, and Life Sciences (except Nanotechnology and Biotechnology). While it is more efficient just to consider the NAICS Codes, here is the SIC version for 54174

8731 Commercial Physical and Biological Research
8733 Noncommercial Research Organizations

As you can see the wording is slightly different, but, that difference can be confusing on certain codes, so once again, might be best just to search and use the NAICS codes.

NAICS Industry Code Category Sample

 Now in case you're wondering and in not making you search for it, here is a basic Top 10 list of companies that fall under category of NAICS 54174, but by no means even comes close to all of the industries in the category of Computer Sciences, this is only offered as an example, as follows:

The expansiveness of this category of computer sciences with all of it's various different NAICS Business - Industry codes offers considerable potentials to examine for those of you wanting to expand your SHR and aPHR career in. A few others include everything from Computer Systems Design Services, CAD (computer-aided design) systems integration design services to Electronic Computer Manufacturing, Analog computers manufacturing, Custom Computer Programming Services and much more, a considerable source of potentials for you to examine and an interesting way to consider putting your SHR and aPHR career to work in.

Company Insights to Look For

On each of the company's websites you search you'll probably find Milestones, About Us and Services/Products or something close. Those 3 major areas are where you should begin your qualifying of each business of interest to you. Those 3 topics alone will give you enough to get a good indepth look at what the company does, produces, services, provides, how it operates and it's policies and practices. a good hour on each site will give you a considerable Familiarity Insight.

Here are a couple of basic examples so you can start to see the potential in Familiarity of the company. *Note: The name of the company is substituted as ABC company as this is not a referral, simply an example of a couple of About Us, Milestones and Services/Products, sections, etc. By the way, not 'all' companies feature a Milestones but something similar so always look for *News *Offering *Solutions *Offerings, etc. Milestones can generally be found with Aerospace industries so use creative judgment. These are just examples of 3 areas to focus on.

Sample 1
The ABC company is a biotechnology company focused on novel biological and drug delivery approaches. Our goal is to bring innovative and disruptive solutions that improve the patient experience and, potentially patient outcomes, when our technology is combined with established or emerging treatments.

Sample 2
ABC Sciences knows it takes more than laboratory research to get drugs approved. The company is a clinical research organization (CRO) that provides an array of drug development services to pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies around the world.

Sample 3
Whether you are a discovery or translational researcher, the GeoMx DSP is the most flexible spatial solution designed to conform to your ever-changing research needs. The ABC company DSP data center provides end-to-end software solution from image acquisition, region of interest selection to a fully integrated data analysis experience.

Just those 3 short examples can give you an idea if that firm is right for you to approach or market before going any further and you'll know exactly what to research to become familiar with that company and you will more than likely find a vast amount of topics to choose from that interest you enough to familiarize yourself with.

Know the Firm Before You Apply/Approach

Keep in mind something that cannot be overstated here, make sure you select an industry that interests you and probably more important, one you have at least a basic understanding of or are will to learn more about 'BEFORE' you seek out that firm. Look at it this way, when you want to apply your career to one of these industries or even approach or market to them as your own HR service business, that first off they already expect you to have a thorough understanding and educational knowledge of the Human Resource business, but what you can surprise them with is a solid 'Familiarity' of 'Their' business. That has been what we have been referring to as your Familiarity Bio supplement to your resume or marketing statement. While this applies to both Paralegal / LDA and SHR aPHR, the human resource division may have an even more needed working knowledge of the specific company's business type as you will be involved in hiring screenings, etc. Those hiring screenings can be complicated in advanced science and technology business when looking for specific staff types to fulfill a complicated position and being familiar with the firm and it's needs helps you screen for just that. Sure, your SHR / aPHR certifications can qualify you for the hiring process, but does not address the specifics of the person being considered. That's where importance and value of having a solid understanding of each company 'Type' you apply or market to comes in. This familiarity is what can set you apart from all the others.

The time to start you research on companies of interest to you is 'During' the time you take your courses, not afterwards. This gives you a head-start. A little research each week can go a long way. Now by the time you've completed your SHR and aPHR courses you have also performed your 'Familiarity' self course and by the time you graduate you should have a decent list of firms to approach or market to.  Q: As a Paralegal working for a law firm you know that one of your main responsibilities is to draft client calendars and ensure accurate dates. But do you know what your/your firm's liabilities and client recourse is should you mis-calendarize causing the firm's client to incur an adverse outcome or financial loss?

A:  Any attorney that uses the services of a paralegal is ultimately liable to the client for any harm that results from the paralegal's negligence or misconduct. Put another way, the duties that an attorney owes to the client are non-delegable, meaning that it is the attorney who bears the brunt for mistakes made within the attorney's office. That being said, no attorney is going to be happy (to put it mildly) with errors -- especially calendaring errors -- made by his or her paralegal(s). The key here is to know not only how to compute dates (ranging from applicable Statute of Limitations dates to any relevant transaction dates) but then TO BEAT THOSE DATES so that things like court filings, discovery responses, revised contracts and the like are not only calendared for completion before they are due, but also sent/filed A FEW DAYS EARLY. How to do this is just one of the important subjects we cover in our Paralegal program.
