As a SHR student you'll rapidly learn
that Human Resource managers are involved in planning,
directing and coordinating a firm's administrative
functions. As an SHR assistant and/or manager you'll
also be involved in recruiting, interviewing, and hiring
new staff and you'll also serve as sort of a 'middleman'
between management and employees in the process. Now
based on that obvious job/title description, what can
set you apart from the others is familiarizing yourself
with the 'specifics' of those functions as they apply to
a particular 'type' of business. In our advanced
articles and tips you'll be seeing many various industry
categories we discuss so as to get you thinking how you

a subject you're either, or both, familiar with or have
an interest in. In this instance, we're going to be
discussing an introduction into SHR in Agriculture, so
when you read on think as to how the role you'll be
playing as an SHR can be maximized by a familiarization

Responsibilities and Functions
One of the questions you might ask your self is
“What responsibilities will I have?”
Well
for starters, you'll implement and support the policies
and practices that are consistent with the philosophy of
the company. And as they relate to this topic, those
philosophies are based on how they would be applicable
in the Agricultural field. You'll also need to have an
understanding of human resource laws in order to ensure
the company is compliant with laws and regulations, and
the agricultural industry has it's share of those.
Another function would be to find innovative ways to
recruit and retain new talent, and a familiarization and
interest in the Agricultural field will certainly help
propel you along with your career in this area. In other
words another value added asset to your career is that
you would be bringing to an agricultural firm both your
skills you have acquired with your LAVC SHR and aPHR
education and your familiarization and interest in the
agricultural industry.

analyze HRM (Human Resource Manager) practices in
agriculture, including recruitment, selection, training,
evaluation, motivation, compensation and benefit
systems, discipline and termination, safety and health
implementation
Being able to make basic
comparisons between agricultural Human Resource
practices to practices in other industries illustrates
your sills/potentials as a reliable and valuable
agricultural management personnel or start-up SHR
assistant and your desire for self-manager education
with an interest to excel.
A Wide
Array of Categories in the Agriculture Industry
Your
choices in this field may be more than you realize. Want
a big government position, try the USDA, Looking for the
more direct, or rural approach, then there are tons of
potentials you can review. But regardless of your
interest you'll need to consider some very important
factors in this 'Rural' atmosphere that's different from
all the rest.
Elements of
Familiarization - The Needs - The Functions - The Basics
*This is not intended to be overwhelming to imply
that an intricate in-depth knowledge of each individual
industry be necessary, but to bring to your attention
areas of 'Familiarization' whereas you can illustrate
your desire and potential with a familiarity and
knowledge of functions both necessary and valuable to
address the needs within the Agriculture Industry. For
example, here are a few categories within the
Agricultural Industry:
A more detailed
assessment of the Livestock area is that a managers'
work environment and tasks differ from the majority of
managers in studies of managerial leadership than those
across other industries in general.

Another area that plays a major role is due to the
fact that growing farm sizes in U.S. agriculture along
with retaining and motivating employees is rapidly
becoming an area of real importance. A key factor in job
retention for all agricultural interests is that of
motivation. Additionally, knowing some basic
agricultural functions and terms can also be a plus for
your SHR situation. For example Dairy Farm managers may
be referred to as a supervisor or 'Herdsman'. Showing
that you are familiar with some basic terms commonly
used in this industry gives you a slight edge over
others just seeking a HR position.
While
recruitment is obviously a major role all HR staff are
involved in, understanding the Differences in Employment
Recruitment of the Agriculture Industry can be slightly
different than other business categories. For example,
in Agriculture, many new employees come from word of
mouth referred to or by other current employers from
other farms. So as a SHR aPHR you're job may be slightly
less on marketing to potential new employees but to
qualifying those presented to you. One factor that has
caused problems in Livestock industries is that of
hiring employees with limited English Language
efficiency, as this has various concerns associated with
it that as a SHR staff you may have to deal with.
That is a factor relative to the Agricultural
Industry that does present some legal matters that all
SHR staff must be aware of that are associated with the
diverse employee situations arising from different
venues and backgrounds and dealing with those with
limited English language proficiency. This has led way
to the necessity for intermediaries for translation that
has changed the work and communication processes
somewhat. Along with that factor, eligibility of
employees for employment in the United States has
brought on the concern for the potential high risk of
hiring someone with fraudulent papers.
So as you
can see, the Agriculture Industry has it's own unique
set of circumstances and needs to deal with that can far
differ from other types of business categories. With the
many different and interesting categories within the
Agricultural Industry to choose from, you now have an
opportunity to apply your new career in an area you are
interested in. Planning in advance can bring you many
valuable potentials so if Agricultural SHR is for you,
then start by supplementing your career courses with
some of your own 'Familiarization' research.
