Strategic Human Resources Careers in the Entertainment

Your Strategic Human Resource and aPHR Career to the

Of the many different articles featured here on
the LFC site, one that seems to be of interest to many
considering their career efforts in is that of the
Entertainment Industry. With tens of thousands of
different job categories in this industry it certainly
deserves covering in various different ways. This
article focuses mainly on applying your career in
Strategic Human Resources and of course your aPHR
support course, to that of the major film studios. Each
of these have their own HR departments as there are many
aspects that require the need of what Human Resources
provide. While there are also some fairly good sized
independent productions, it is the major studios that
have their own separate HR departments as they have the
larger budgets to cover this expense on an on-going
in-house basis.
The Need for HR in Major Film Studios
Of the many different articles featured here on the LFC

considering their career efforts in is that of the
Entertainment Industry. With tens of thousands of
different job categories in this industry it certainly
deserves covering in various different ways. This

The good thing for those of you
taking courses locally, is that Southern California is
the Entertainment Capital of the world, providing a vast
array of opportunity right in your own backyard. As far
as the term Entertainment Industry this main focus is on
the movie studios for your SHR considerations. Of course
there is also the Music Industry as well, but for right
now, that's for another topic.
Another often
overlooked connected category in this Industry is the
amusement and theme park business, another interesting
consideration with promising potentials, as it does fall
in the category of Entertainment. This industry has been
rapidly growing in the last several years. It is overall
understood that the Entertainment Industry generally
applies four basic strategies to their operations,
Hiring, Providing, Developing and Retention. While not
every studio has this addition to their business they
have their own individual significance and require a lot
of different departments to function. Two of the largest
and most commonly known are Universal MCA, it's studios
and it's attraction centers and of course, Disney. All
of this revolves around outstanding customer servicing,
and this doesn't just happen easy, it must be planned
out and implemented incorporating very strategic
methods.
Here's where the HR department comes in.
The HR Department is basically the 'Go Between' to the
Corporate level and the Staff level, or, executives and
employees if you want. These two departments must run
smoothly in order to achieve that outstanding level of
service. This is where the Corporate top management must
realize the importance of Recognizing and Rewarding
those staff 'employees', who exhibit those excellence in
service behaviors. The importance of this is, basically
to the stock holders as it supports the profit margins.
Major Studios Have Strategic Plans
The function of the human resources business is to
produce competent personnel and to keep employees
productive, while maintaining compatible relations with
the top level corporate management. Even those companies
obtaining only Temporary help have very important needs
for Human Resources services.
Event planning is
also another area in the Entertainment Industry that
requires some solid Human Resource service, and that one
is more often considered as being associated with the
Music Industry.
HR services are most generally
utilized in the Large to Medium sized business
industries so that statement provides a good guideline
in developing a strategic career plan.

The Importance of Familiarity with the Motion
Picture Industry
As a career minded HR graduate, with your aPHR, and yes,
this can not be overstated as to its importance, you
have options and considerations in deciding on the
career path you want to follow in this industry. You've
heard of those stories of someone starting out in the
mail room and rising to the position of CEO at a major
studio, well some of those stories, while not the common
place, are true. The interesting thing about those
stories is that they all involve one very basic element,
something we discuss throughout the LFC site, from mail
delivery to CEO requires a lot of 'Familiarity' with the
entire operations of the Studio. That's right,
delivering from the mail room at the studio you learn
all the different departments and a lot about what they
each do. In other words, the mail room probably gives
one the most familiarity with a studio you can get as
all departments receive mail and you learn everything
about all departments and often meet the execs'. But
what about an example instead of just giving
generalities? Ok, here's two for you.
Barry
Diller started in the mail room and became CEO of
Paramount Pictures, creating Fox and USA and is said to
be worth over a billion dollars. How about David Geffen
known not only for his multiple record labels, but also
for his part in founding DreamWorks, also another who
worked in the mail room.
So why not give yourself
some element of Familiarity of not just the major film
studios, but the specific film studio you are seeking
your career at and take that with you going in?
Giving Yourself That Maximum-Impact
The importance of familiarizing yourself with various
aspects of the motion picture industry prior to
approaching this business to launch your career, cannot
be overstated. By showing a familiarity with this
industry you also show that you bring both your SHR
(Strategic Human Resource) qualifications and value in
bringing a solid understanding of how the Motion Picture
industry functions and its needs to the firm. A couple
considerations should be how major studios operate in
general, the many different departments that make all of
it happen and of course, a select few interesting facts
or stories about each studio you plan on applying to.
This will show you have a definite interest in this
industry as well as taking your career seriously as to
understand at least the basic functions of both the
industry and the particular studio, a big benefit for
you.
Don't make it overwhelming though, as you're already
taking courses that require extra studies, but make it
interesting and consider it a support necessity to give
you that 'Maximum Impact' for your career.
Remember, that when you do apply for a position as an HR
associate at one of these major studios it will be the
HR Department that qualifies you, so knowing both your
career subject matter, that of the HR person along with
some good knowledge of how the Motion Picture business
functions, gives you a decided edge when applying.

Your SHR Career Considerations
The Human Resource department at these studios is of
major importance to it's day to day operations, so by
bringing your SHR (Strategic Human Resources), a good
term to use for yourself as it sets you aside from
others, and taking that extra effort to get your very
fast and affordable aPHR certification, along with a
good solid familiarity of industry and studio functions
makes a solid addition to your resume. In fact if you
are intending on reaching out to the studios with your
SHR career, then you need to just consider your
Familiarity Bio a very important part of what you have
to offer. While it may not necessarily take you from the
mail room to CEO, it will most certainly be recognized
and the pay and benefits at these major studios are
often quite good,

Paralegal Calendar
Dates - Recourse and Liability by Jonathan Arnold
Q:
As a Paralegal working for a law
firm you know that one of your main responsibilities is
to draft client calendars and ensure accurate dates. But
do you know what your/your firm's liabilities and client
recourse is should you mis-calendarize causing the
firm's client to incur an adverse outcome or financial
loss?
A: Any attorney that
uses the services of a paralegal is ultimately liable to
the client for any harm that results from the
paralegal's negligence or misconduct. Put another way,
the duties that an attorney owes to the client are
non-delegable, meaning that it is the attorney who bears
the brunt for mistakes made within the attorney's
office. That being said, no attorney is going to be
happy (to put it mildly) with errors -- especially
calendaring errors -- made by his or her paralegal(s).
The key here is to know not only how to compute dates
(ranging from applicable Statute of Limitations dates to
any relevant transaction dates) but then TO BEAT THOSE
DATES so that things like court filings, discovery
responses, revised contracts and the like are not only
calendared for completion before they are due, but also
sent/filed A FEW DAYS EARLY. How to do this is just one
of the important subjects we cover in our Paralegal
program.
