Expanding Your SHR Value The Importance of HR in Agriculture, Farming and
Live Stock Industries
Whether you're seeking a career in the U.S., Canada or
U.K. for example, the 'across the board' term Human
resources (HR) means and involves a lot more than just
hiring. It includes managing board members, volunteers,
full and part-time staff, and contractors along with the
policies and practices that relate to them. So as a
person seeking either a career with a Farm or
Agricultural business or as a HR with an aPHR
certificate providing services as your own business, it
only makes sense to offer new, creative and 'Super
Solutions' that others don't provide. Automation may be
making for a lot of upgrades and changes, but people are
as essential to organizations as weather, prices and
technology are to business profitability. Human
resources affect the organization’s governance and
financial and strategic decisions at the board table.
This is the matter whether or not you serve on a small
grass roots organization or a national committee.
Establishing and building a farm's organization for
success requires a strong and effective human resources
plan, which includes hiring of the 'right' personnel and
keeping high-performing, engaged people employed within
your organization.
Your HR Career - Geographically Friendly
A note worth mentioning here is one of Geographical
potential. As a Human Resource career in California for
example, you're not faced with the same geographical
restriction as your counterpart seeking a paralegal
career would. A paralegal and LDA completing their
paralegal course with certificate would be restricted to
various counties within the state of California. With
your HR career you can take your course with a
California based school and take your career almost
anywhere where a firm would accept you based on your
credential, experience and suitability to the industry
you're applying to.
What is a main reason to implement human resources into
your agriculture organization? A skilled and effective
employee is key to your organization’s success and
sustainability. Human resources helps you select,
attract and keep employees by guiding and aligning them
with your organization’s goals and objectives. All
organizations – no matter their size or structure –
benefit from HR. The key is to create and implement a
successful human resources plan. But, having a
certificate in HR and knowing the functions is one thing
and Familiarization of a particular business setup is
taking it a giant step forward. Hiring a Human Resources
person that has both an interest and understanding of
the Wants - Needs and Solutions an Agricultural Farming
business, small or large, faces, makes that an almost
Super Human Resource individual, an SHR.
Realize
that humans are your most important farm resource, even
in today's advanced automated environment. Attracting
and retaining good workers on your farm doesn’t just
happen you have to make it happen, and that's where a
Super Human Resource person can solve your problem, one
that knows 'there business' and one that 'knows yours',
in other words, Super Quality staff and Solid Retention.
Automation and People - a Team
Agriculture, just like most other categories in
industry, is changing. More new technology and better
automation arrive every year, especially with
advancements in robotics in agriculture, farming, crops
and livestock needs. But it also creates or helps create
one of the biggest shortfalls - people power. Simply
put, without the right people, farms face a difficult
task to adopt the technological marvels that are
supposed to propel them into the future, they need to
work as a Team.
The best time for Farmers to
develop a solid HR plan for their functions is
yesterday, so finding industries in agriculture that can
appreciate and need the services of a solid HR person
that knows both their business and the farm's is a task
of itself. But that makes for a strong opportunity for
you as a SHR person to pursue.
While generally a
good HR plan starts with a review of a farms business
functions from an HR perspective. Previous reviews of
the number of people hired and the times of the year
they were employed, problems that arose and solutions
that were needed and performed. A good HR person will
strategize this all out ahead of time to save time,
money and production and there are numerous ways to do
this.
Listing the Job Descriptions is not
enough
While a basic function of the human resource management
plan usually includes noting the job descriptions for
all the positions on the farm, a Solid Human Resource
person will familiarize themselves with these functions
'ahead of time', both labor and technical, before they
even pursue this industry as a career or as their own
HR/aPHR service provider. That is one difference between
a traditional Human Resources person (HR) or a SHR
(Super Human Resources) 'specialist'. Perhaps you could
even go one step further and coin and promote the phrase
SHRS (Super Human Resources Specialist), if you want to
throw some energy and Promotional pazaaz' in there. It's
all about marketing and promoting yourself, BUT, if you
do you'd better be able to back it up. You've backed it
up with the education choice you made as an HR, but
taking it upon yourself to Familiarize yourself with the
industry category you choose is a Must, and in
agriculture and farming, there's a ton of variations to
choose from. This can, as stated before, be an
interesting review of some NAICS industry codes. You'll
find categories, sub categories, sub-sub categories and
so on that you probably have never thought of, all of
which help expand your opportunities for a career in
this industry or potential marketing of your career
services for your own HR/aPHR business. Just scan
through a short list of some of these below to see what
I'm talking about here.
