Brand Yourself
Going In!
As we've illustrated many times in some of our
Maximum-Impact Articles and Tips, a resume has many
features. It's up to you to ensure that you present a
most unique and credible representation of those
features in your presentation. The obvious is that
you've already selected Human Resource as your career,
but now that you're in the stage of securing your
courses is the time to put strong consideration as to
'Where' you intend on applying that career. The 'Where'
is of course, the industry category you choose, and by
choosing one you're really interested in and would
really enjoy working in you are now giving yourself our
branded term; 'Maximum-Impact' advantage. Working in a
career you enjoy (SHR - Strategic Human Resource) and
then applying it to the industry you're fascinated with,
gives you a great opportunity as you're far more capable
of being a strong asset and have a valuable rewarding
career if you engage in something you 'enjoy' doing,
right?
One very unique way we encourage you to
do this is by selecting the industry you have the most
interest in and supplementing your HR and aPHR courses
with a strong familiarity in your industry choice and
educate yourself with as many foundational aspects of
that industry as possible. Note the mention of what
should be considered by you as an SHR professional is a
'Given.' That should automatically be followed up with
getting your aPHR certification, an obvious companion
supplement for your SHR career. At the risk of sounding
like a used car salesman, at the low low cost and ultra
fast completion time for your aPHR, you should look at
that one as at bonus you 'can't afford Not to obtain!
Add that to your Familiar Industry category and you've
given yourself a big edge be setting yourself apart from
the rest.
We've covered in our articles numerous unique SIC
(Standard Industrial Classification) code type
businesses, entertainment, music, agriculture, AI,
etc.,but usually without covering what the SIC System
actually is. So, without getting into deep technical hay
here, it is important and useful to understand some
basics.
The original SIC code from 1937 has
slowly been/being revised/replaced by the OMB (Office of
Management and Budget), using the NAICS code (North
American Industry Classification System. The SEC has
still been using the SIC code system even though the
update is to follow, however, that's not something to
fret over though.
These are basically 4 digit
numerical codes that are assigned by the U.S. Government
in order to identify the 'Primary' business 'type; which
also helps promote both uniformity and comparability for
statistical data collection purposes. It also can play a
major role in Trademarks, for both establishing/creating
and disputes, etc. The SIC/NAICS system arranges the
economy into a number of divisions, divided into
multiple digit groups and further subdivided into
additional digit groups that are finally compounded into
a larger number of 4 digit categories. All assisting
it's primary purpose of classification and
identification. Some of those sub-division categories
include locations, revenues, types, activities, etc.
Within all that, there is some valuable information you
can use to your benefit as an SHR, but by now you should
be getting the general idea.
Many trademark
disputes have been easily settled by carefully examining
specifics in the SIC code system as it goes a long with
in helping to answer and settle the main question of a
name dispute of 'exactly' what industry are each one in.
if slightly similar with potential consumer confusion
due to a sub-division review, then there's a potential
breach/problem, if entirely different other than by name
only, not industry and does in no way confuse the public
on the service/product, then there's potentially
no-problem. While as a Paralegal at a law firm you might
have more of a direct involvement in this system,
depending on the firm of course, but it's still good to
have a basic understanding of sorts, because it will be
one or more of these SIC business categories you would
be seeking to apply your new SHR/aPHR career into, be it
as a career at a firm or freelancer running your own SHR
business.
Right, a bit boring and something we
really have mentioned before, but necessary and good
info to know and be able to use to your benefit. Want to
know more, just pick an industry and go on over to
SEC.gov or try the NAICS Association web site sometime
and play with their free 'drill-down' search engine on
all things SIC, you can even check out any firm you want
to apply to before hand or your 'Familiarity Industry'
ring you want to toss your SHR Career into. that will
give you a 'ton' of info you won't find elsewhere. Can
be a bit like searching the LIB (Library of Congress)
but on a little bit direct scale. Plus, as an SHR either
with a career at a firm or independent, you can sound
impressive by knowing how to list inside data on various
industries and make some creative comparisons when
applicable. Plus, over 1/2 of business executives even
hardly even know what these codes are or how to use
them, making you look even more valuable.
Your Career: SHR - Your Support: aPHR - Your
Uniqueness - Familiarity Business Choosing your
Industry
You've chosen your career as SHR, you've obtained your
career support, aPHR, now it's time to focus on your
industry to apply it all to, and do it 'while' your
taking your courses, not a year afterwards. Go in with
decisive and creative elements and you'll start off
strong!
In order to illustrate the main
foundation of this article, let's use the Documentary
and Film industry as an example for your most interested
industry to apply your upcoming new HR (SHR) career to.
The industries differ, but the principle is the same, so
for those of you who are interested in other business
category (Industry) types, just apply the same
principles.

Paralegal Tip #3 - Nov 2019 Maxim Paralegal Tip #3 - Nov
2019 'Your 'Certification of Industry Familiarity'
by Jonathan Arnold, Esq..
30-60 minutes 3 days a week
researching your Industry Familiarity during your
Paralegal course makes it enjoyable. 30 minutes studying
the industry to apply your Paralegal career will leave
you a 'cliff hanger' of interest to look forward to.
When you graduate with your Paralegal Certification
you'll have your own Maximum-Impact 'Certification of
Industry Familiarity' in the industry you choose.
Identifying the Most Applicable functions of the
Industry
First thing you're going to want to do is to start by
identifying some of the most important 'related'
business functions of the independent film and
documentary industry that apply to Human Resources
services. In this particular industry there are quite a
few and some good cross-overs as well. When you start
breaking down all of the departments in this industry
you'll start to see how you can actually 'apply' your
SHR/aPHR skills to the benefit of the company. This also
applies if you have the intention of going into business
for yourself as your own Human Resource service firm, so
either way the identification process is just as
valuable, and necessary. A few off the top would be,
below the line production staff, such as transportation,
location scout services, set designers, costumes, actual
film/video crews, insurance riders, and many more. The
actual director and cast would be more of something the
producers would engage in, however, there are instances,
especially in medium to low budget productions whereas a
skilled Human Resource individual with a fluent
knowledge of this industry could actually act in-part as
a casting direct service.
Here's a quick example
of the two codes SIC/NAICS, The technical process of
determining which code applies or to use is another
subject as this is not about lengthy instructional code
searching, but moreover to make a solid point on systems
you can use to your advantage. Each one has it's own
detailed data and once you learn it you can use it, so
here's an example of Film industry classifications.
International Human Resources Professional
SIC Search - Code 7812 Motion Picture and Video
Tape Production Commercials, television: tape or film
production
NAICS Search - 512110 Motion
Picture and Video Production Films, motion picture
production
See, you're starting to learn
already and this barely covers the surface. Another
extremely important aspect of this industry is to also
learn (Familiarize) yourself with it's inside working
terminology. Just being able to spout off some of the
normal terms can give you the impression that you 'know
your stuff!' One of the best examples of this one is if
you wanted to apply your career to TV Advertising. This
is where terminology almost takes position over working
knowledge. This is because if you know/understand the
inside industry terminology then you must know how this
terminology is applied. An entire lengthy list of some
of those terms could be listed here, but that's not the
purpose of this article, this article is to get you
thinking and acting creative - unique - focused and
industry savvy.
Synopsis
Sub-Departments and Terms
Know your industry sub-departments that apply to your
SHR Career and work them into your knowledge 'Familiar'
base and learn the Terminology. Think about those two as
they both go together and you just can't come off as
believable unless you tie them both together.
As
you can start to see, by well-defining each of the
production elements/departments within this industry you
can actually create a need for your services not
normally obvious, but...you need to know your 'stuff'.
That's where your familiarity focusing comes in. In one
of our previous articles we actually gave you a
breakdown example of defining your time to do this. A
brief synopsis (there's another work applicable to this
industry), of this allocation of your time is to
basically do it stress free 'WHILE' your taking your SHR
course. Do not, put the same amount of time into it as
you do your course as remember, this is a major support
role to your SHR, not a replacement. More importantly
however, is that by keeping it a a leisure pace you'll
actually find yourself with actual 'cliff hangers' each
time you begin your next session. Meaning, pick say,
every other day, no more than 1 to 1 1/2 hours to do
your research and familiarizing of the subject. You can
be assured that if you cut a session short say only to
45 minutes, you'll find yourself wanting to continue,
but 'don't. Pick it up next time. WHY? Because the whole
idea is to make this enjoyable while you're cramming for
your mandatory SHR course, not something that weighs you
down and get discouraged to having to do. Make this
something to 'Look Forward to', not 'Dread doing'.
You'll learn more and be far more productive, you'll
also retain more and that's the key as when you're
applying for a career at a firm, or trying to market to
a potential client in the industry. In case you're
wondering, you will be surprised at just how much more
in-depth you'll become in the industry you choose by the
time you obtain your Human Resource / aPHR career
certificates.
Setting yourself Apart - Your Career Realization!
Realize this, there's nothing better than to show up and
let them 'drill' you with questions and being able to
answer and explain details without relying on notes,
lap-tops, iPhones, note pads, mini-pads, maxi-pads, or
pad or computerized programmed answer generated device.
It's just your career industry category you are focused
on and your own interest and knowledge of it. Plus being
able to talk fluently within this industry gives you the
strong appearance of having experience 'in it' even
though you may not and that's a strong influence in your
favor.
Apply this to your career and you'll have
a career you chose with a strong support certification
and be able to apply and market your career to an
industry you not just want to work in, but will be
knowledgeable in and all three will be accomplished at
your graduation!

Maxim Paralegal Tip # 1 - August 2019
Paralegal Calendar
Dates - Recourse and Liability by Jonathan Arnold,
Esq.
Q:
As a Paralegal working for a law
firm you know that one of your main responsibilities is
to draft client calendars and ensure accurate dates. But
do you know what your/your firm's liabilities and client
recourse is should you mis-calendarize causing the
firm's client to incur an adverse outcome or financial
loss?
A: Any attorney that
uses the services of a paralegal is ultimately liable to
the client for any harm that results from the
paralegal's negligence or misconduct. Put another way,
the duties that an attorney owes to the client are
non-delegable, meaning that it is the attorney who bears
the brunt for mistakes made within the attorney's
office. That being said, no attorney is going to be
happy (to put it mildly) with errors -- especially
calendaring errors -- made by his or her paralegal(s).
The key here is to know not only how to compute dates
(ranging from applicable Statute of Limitations dates to
any relevant transaction dates) but then TO BEAT THOSE
DATES so that things like court filings, discovery
responses, revised contracts and the like are not only
calendared for completion before they are due, but also
sent/filed A FEW DAYS EARLY. How to do this is just one
of the important subjects we cover in our Paralegal
program.
