Strategic Human Resource
aPHR Careers in the 'Indie Film-Documentary Industry +
This is one of our 'Maximum-Impact' articles that
actually takes the topic to a new level, also you can
either read beginning to end or end to beginning if you
like. The main original intent on this was to present to
you as an SHR (Strategic Human Resource) with aPHR
certifications unique opportunities in the Indie Film
Industry, such as our recent article for
Paralegals/LDA's in the same field. However, a brief
summary of some 'crossover' options add Maximum-Impact
as many of these could also be applied to actually
seeking a career at a solid firm as well as going it on
your own as an independent. In other words, look at this
one as a 'puller' article. What's a 'puller article?'
One where you can 'pull' elements from a seemingly
non-related category and incorporate it in your career
strategy for your intended marketing focus, or
'Familiarity'. You'll get the idea as you read on. So
let's take a look and remove cluttered elements of
complexity and feature in summary highlight form
potentials and functions of each that you can apply in
the Indie Film Industry as well other applications to
each one. Special note, for those of you new to the
Legal Field Careers site for LAVC you will see the
replacement of SHR for HR, most important, as we
recommend always refer to yourself as an SHR specialist
(Strategic Human Resource) it shows you have given
considerable effort to advancing and 'Maximizing' your
career and market your strategic image to a higher level
over what the rest will refer to themselves as simply
being - HR looking for just a job.
First off,
when considering what to do with your SHR/aPHR career,
consider important elements, such as: job satisfaction,
career potential, variety-options, Independence,
monetary compensation, increased marketing opportunities
and more, such as considering a category with lower
degrees of stress levels, an important factor few will
mention on this topic.
Let's reveal some
traditional and some creative titles/categories relative
to the SHR field that you can 'pull' from on any
industry/commerce related business. Best Careers for
Human Resources Professionals. Important: Keep in
mind that bits, pieces and functions of all of what is
listed here can be considered for 'pulling' purposes
(used in) your career endeavor in the Indie Film
Industry applications and in more ways than one, plus
they can support your Familiarizing interest in your
specialized interest.
Human Resources Manager
A 'One-on-One' Career Class Satisfaction with and
desire to actually help others in your career choice
Having an impact through hiring involvement, program
benefits, training, labor disputes, insurance options
that affect the workers within a/your firm can also be
applied giving you satisfaction in helping others.
Nonprofit Organization(s) Human Resources Expert
For
those who want to Help the World through Helping Others
Nonprofit companies present plentiful opportunities,
such as staff recruiting, coordinating benefits,
development of new programs and more. The Non-Profits
firms traditionally, and yes by intent, hopefully,
function their directives towards making positive
influences and impacts on their operative services
and/or products. This can include a wide range of
categories far too numerous to cover here, but you're
probably well aware of many of them, you'll hear their
ads all over the media sources so pick those that you
find most appealing to you. Human Resource Consultant
Career
The Independent SHR Field of Opportunity 'The
Lone Wolf' approach
Make good money whenever and wherever you want to.
The SHR consultant can charge an open source of
virtually unlimited numbers of companies a high hourly
rate or a 'per-job' cost to provide much-needed
services, and on a 'custom' basis. The benefit to you is
that you are not engulfed in their day to day or
location functions as you are a 'servicing
vendor/provider'. And here's one of the main benefits,
that of being able to 'Specialize' in any number of
fields you are 'Familiar' with, (recognize that concept,
Familiarizing)?
Another really good benefit is
that you get to select a business you want to work with
or market to. The SHR consultant gives you a couple of
really great options re: Independence of choice of what
firm, where is the firm, and Independence of how much to
charge. You set your own boundaries based on sound
marketing and area of influence strategies, and, as we
stress throughout the LFC site in our Maximum-Impact
articles, your personal 'Familiar' interests and
knowledge.
International Human Resources Professional
This career track is great if you like the travel
aspect: You can visit countries all over the world and
experience a great variety of people and cultures.
The job of the international human resources
professional may involve recruiting candidates into
global positions, training and development standards
across an international organization, implementing
benefits plans as national laws allow, labor relations,
employee programs and many more. This HR track involves
the same kinds of tasks that a national human resources
professional might engage in, but with a great variety
of cultures, languages and locations thrown into the
mix. International HR can be interesting if you love to
travel, speak multiple languages and are adept at
engaging successfully with a wide variety of different
customs. Boredom would probably not be something to
worry about with this human resources career path.
Executive Recruiter Servicing Business A
'Headhunter' provider service
This is basically your 'senior executive' job/career
finder service, from Vice Presidents to CEO's. The way
you get paid on this one is generally on an up from
retainer basis or in full upon fulfillment, and the fees
on this one can be very large. This can be a highly
competitive field so you'd have to apply and tolerate a
consistent aggressive approach with competitive
marketing efforts.
Training & Development Manager or Independent
Consultant
For those with teaching interests this may be a
consideration in the corporate arena. While the job
performance includes much of the normal HR elements,
this focuses on actual employee training in custom held
classes, workshops, conferences and such. Here you would
be developing effective work methods for employees based
on categories the employer deems important, formulating
sessions that both entertain and inform makes you a
valuable asset, and there's another area where your
creative development comes in. Entertain is a key word
here.
According to a CNNMoney survey, 60 percent
of education and training consultants listed this as one
of those low-stress career jobs. As a consultant you
would perform/provide 'in parallel' tasks as mentioned
above, but without the full-time commitment, you can
schedule these to conform to you calendar workloads
setting your own hours. A lot of companies hire on a
contract or retainer basis and that works out well for
both. This one is truly an 'indie' career with
cross-over opportunities.
Human Resources IT Specialist with Increasing
'Niches'
A Potential for accelerated advancement and earnings
While the basic foundation of HR functions have been
relatively stable over the years, the increasing
expansion of new technological advancements have and
continues to increase 10 fold. Don't forget you can
throw in the advancement of AI/Robotics in this mix as
well.
Specializing in this niche field can be
highly rewarding. It's not really necessary to break
this one down into parts and categories as there are far
too many side options here, just the category alone
speaks for itself, and once again, herein are some good
'pullers' for you in your specialized field of
Familiarized interest, such as Indie Film Documentary
Industry.
SHR Entrepreneur - Your Career to an Auto
Pilot Early Retirement
After you have worked hard to build your successful
business, you can hire someone else to run it and make
peaceful income
PEO - the Headhunter Outsource method
Ever hear the term PEO? (Professional Employer
Organization). That's just about what we've been talking
about in much of these above mentioned options. Other
names are Headhunters, Consulting, Outsourcing, etc.
this can be a really 'rewarding' result of your years of
hard work in your Entrepreneurial Career in SHR. Plus,
more and more large firms are outsourcing their HR
needs, a bit of a 'high risk' venture but if successful
enough, you could always sell your firm for big 'bucks'.
Your SHR Career in the Indie Film/Docu Industry
Now for the focus title of this article
As a SHR with your aPHR certifications acting as an
independent operator, you have a lot of different
strategic marketing avenues in the Indie Film industry.
This especially hods true when dealing with 'non-union'
projects, of which there are plenty. Now when we mention
Indie Film Industry, just think of both full length
feature films TRT (total running time) approx 90-100
minutes, short films usually around 5-6 minutes, and
documentaries, usually 30 or 60 minutes. This also can
include another category of producers of industrial
videos/films.
Before we start though be sure you
read our previous article on
Paralegals in the Indie
Film Industry as you will find very valuable insights
and useful factors that are a companion to your SHR
efforts you won't find in any one place. Plus you;'ll
also see some powerhouse strategic and direct marketing
resources for your new SHR biz you don't know of unless
you're very familiar with this industry.
Ok now that
you get the general idea, let's look into the
application of your SHR to this industry and how, when
and where you can apply your career service
One
technical piece of information is that when considering
the film industry category you'll be looking at 2 very
distinct levels of operation, one is what is referred to
in the industry as 'above the line' and the other 'below
the line'. This industry phrase is used to determine
budgets and assist with funding efforts. Think of it as
a 'pecking' order of sorts, look have you ever heard of
any one saying "hey let's go see this new film because
Hubert Crumbly did some carpenter work on it? No, I
doubt it, unless he's your relative, but you certainly
would if you recognized a major star right?
Above the Line - The Movie Industry
Above the line is generally just that, your main cast,
stars and supporting cast, the DP (Director of
Photography), Director, Producers, Writers and such.
These are the high line paid cast/crew. This is a far
more difficult one to focus on unless you have years of
experience directly in the feature film and television
broadcast world. This would require knowledge and
understanding of acting, production, script layouts,
post production functions, casting and such. But believe
me, hiring staff for as an HR for a firm is nothing like
trying to perform casting duties in film and television,
big difference that requires specific industry
experience and understanding.
Below the Line - The
Movie Industry
Below the line is where you should be focusing your
services to as this is the actual staff that is the
foundation for the production, such as location scouts,
electricians, sound, carpenters, caterers,
accommodation, grips, painters, craft services,
assistants, laborers, transportation and on and on.
Basically, the hourly wage workers. There are some that
can cross over but that's a general idea. The below
the line categories are more closely related to many of
the functions and service fields a normal HR (SHR - YOU)
would be dealing with in the regular business world and
ones you would be more solidly familiar with, so while
the titles are different from what you're used to, your
application of services and expertise would not be.
Union vs Non-Union
With a non-union type project you'll find many of the
below the line staff wearing multiple hats, but with
union projects it's far tighter and generally can't be
crossed over or mixed. Now if you think that there isn't
quite enough here, realize I only touched the surface,
just watch the end credit of any film, or even TV
production and you'll sit there for what seems like an
hour watching all the credits scroll by. So in line with
the Familiarization aspect pushed throughout our
Maximum-Impact articles, learn some of these job
function elements and gain a basic understanding of the
Indie film production world. Starting to see the
application value of the seemingly non-related topics
covered earlier? If the Indie Film Industry is for you,
then take all of what you've been introduced here and
form your strategic list of exactly what services you
can offer to 'as-many-as-possible' on the categories
mentioned. You'll start to see an entire stream of
categories and sub-categories where marketing can be
applied. The best place to start for the entertainment
industry category can be found in our recent article on
Paralegals in the Indie Film Industry. So start
formulating your interests, your familiarity favorites
and with the potential job classifications that fit
within this industry and you'll see a wide range of
opportunity for your career in the Indie Film world.
Incorporate the 'Pullers'
If you specialize in those areas that you're familiar
with, most interested in you increase your value while
reducing the stress level, so pull from all those niche
areas of seemingly non-related typical HR service
categories mentioned in this article and combine that
with your own special areas of interest and
familiarization and build your career around that,
adding to it from time to time on those new topics you
find of interest.
It bears repeating to go on
over to our most recent article on PL/LDA in the Indie
Film/Documentary Industry as well as our
Maximum-Impact Articles and Tips Section as even though you are
approaching this from your own SHR/aPHR career interest,
there are some extremely valuable marketing and other
important applicable elements you must be aware of that
will give you that 'added' Maximum-Impact' advantage.
Remember, our Maximum-Impact articles you won't find
in any one place anywhere, are not your basic 'owners
manual' with step-by-step instructions, but far more,
they are designed to boost your application potentials
and to enhance your creativity in your High-Velocity
career you have chosen to partake in. Realize that this
is not something you're going to learn from
instructional material, but more importantly, something
you develop on your own.

Maxim Paralegal Tip # 1 - August 2019
Paralegal Calendar
Dates - Recourse and Liability by Jonathan Arnold,
Esq.
Q:
As a Paralegal working for a law
firm you know that one of your main responsibilities is
to draft client calendars and ensure accurate dates. But
do you know what your/your firm's liabilities and client
recourse is should you mis-calendarize causing the
firm's client to incur an adverse outcome or financial
loss?
A: Any attorney that
uses the services of a paralegal is ultimately liable to
the client for any harm that results from the
paralegal's negligence or misconduct. Put another way,
the duties that an attorney owes to the client are
non-delegable, meaning that it is the attorney who bears
the brunt for mistakes made within the attorney's
office. That being said, no attorney is going to be
happy (to put it mildly) with errors -- especially
calendaring errors -- made by his or her paralegal(s).
The key here is to know not only how to compute dates
(ranging from applicable Statute of Limitations dates to
any relevant transaction dates) but then TO BEAT THOSE
DATES so that things like court filings, discovery
responses, revised contracts and the like are not only
calendared for completion before they are due, but also
sent/filed A FEW DAYS EARLY. How to do this is just one
of the important subjects we cover in our Paralegal
program.
