Admiralty, or maritime, law, is a unique body of law that governs maritime activities and offenses and transcends national borders and the respective legal systems different countries use. It is both ancient and intricate and paralegals who work in the field will end up studying, referencing, and sometimes citing legal precedent with roots stretching to ancient Rome, the Phoenicians, and Sharia law.

Even more than most types of law, Admiralty law is steeped in tradition. Shipping is one of the most ancient tools of organized commerce and litigation over disputes on the high seas stretches back centuries. Although technology occasionally presents new interpretations of the principals of admiralty law, many of the landmark cases in the field still date to the 17th or 18th centuries.

Paralegal Job Market Trends in California
*Keep in mind that in So Cal you have the 5th Largest Sea Port in the World, San Pedro Harbor or The Port of Los Angeles as it also has been called.

Ranked second in the nation for both its employment (33,490) and its average pay of paralegals ($66,250) as of May 2020, California remains standout for opportunities in this profession. In fact, the average salary for paralegals in California is $10,000 higher than the national average. Of course, some of this difference in pay is due to a higher cost of living in California; however, the sheer number of industries that demand the services of qualified and competent paralegals also influences the pay of these legal support professionals in California.

Even more impressive, paralegals with significant experience and those with a skillset and credentials in a specific area of law can easily climb the career ladder. The top 10% of paralegals in California earned about $102,540, or $49.30 per hour, and that was as of May 2020.

The Maritime Industry basically revolves around ships, the seas and the borderless global business it deals in. Therefore, it helps to start with the basic rule that every merchant ship - vessel needs to be  registered to a state of its choice. Once registered, the ship is then bound to carry the flag of that state (i.e., the ships Flag State) and is accordingly bound by the rules and regulations enforced by the same.

The practice of registering the ship to a state different than that of the ship
s owner is known as Flag of Convenience (or FOC). Now here's the legal aspect slightly more appropriate for your Paralegal colleagues, but nonetheless one that also associates the potential for high-paying careers in this field. In order to be included in the list of Flag States, a shipper has to have the necessary financial and technical maritime foundation that outlines the shippers ability to be a legitimate maritime operation, in other words, a large enough business ability to produce and perform.

On a side note, there is also a balance that has to be struck between the commercial advantages of selecting a particular flag and the need to discourage the use of flags that do not meet their international obligations. Then it must adhere to all the standards and regulatory mandates established by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the agency of the U.N. established in 1948 that is responsible for regulating shipping industries. The IMO currently has over 170 Member States and three Associate Members dealing with safety, environmental concerns, legal matters, technical co-operation, maritime security and the efficiency of shipping, etc. Starting to observe some of the HR Potential here? Well, while that's more for the Maritime Legal eagles to deal with, and I might add, a challenge worthy of one of our Paralegal / LDA graduates, for Paralegals on the other hand, well, that's just another option for management and job function career opportunities.
